Creative Teaching
How do you show students the relevance of what they are learning and yet make the lessons fun? Lucinda Durkee, Computer Instructor at CARES Rao Musunuru M.D. Enrichment Center in Hudson came up with a great idea. Called “The Luau Project”, it got the students involved in planning for a fictional luau. They had to set up folders on their computers, search the Internet for information about Hawaii, save the data they found to folders, make invitations using clip art, send out emails about the fictional event and perform many other tasks.
“I thought of it in the middle of the night. I wanted something for them to do to make the class more fun”, said Durkee referring to “The Luau Project”. “I wanted them to apply all that they had learned”. She succeeded. The students thoroughly enjoyed the project and many commented on the valuable lessons they had learned: · “Now I know the value of using folders.” · “I know I can copy/cut or paste one document to another folder.”
·
“I can search the
internet for information and save it to a folder for future
reference.” |
