What a wonderful group of people attend the Doll Making Class every Wednesday morning at 9:30!
Louise Manalakos began making dolls at the CARES Center on Old Dixie Highway when she was looking for something to do. She has attended the class at our Enrichment Center for the past five years and has become the leader.
The adorable dolls are donated to the Abuse Center, Mc Donald House, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Police and Fire Departments and any children’s facility in need.
Tom Loughlin, who makes wooden toys, with a group of men, takes along these handmade dolls and distributes them to the various agencies. Tom also picks up fabric and lace, and delivers these materials to Louise for her group.
Tom calls this group “Angels” and gave each one the gift of a hand carved angel.
Louise gave Tom’s group 150 handmade dolls in February and has another 150 ready for delivery.
Effie Lazerow’s neighbor introduced her to the class about a year ago. Laura Hendley and Ann Casale joined a couple of months ago. They all enjoy being with friends and knowing they are helping children.
Gloria Mirra, who has come to the Center for five years, feels that doing something worthwhile, keeping your mind active and enjoying the camaraderie of others is wonderful.
Helen Wagner saw an article in the paper about three years ago. Her husband, who has since passed away, encouraged her to come to CARES. She is the face painter of the dolls, giving them their own little personalities. She says this group has been a godsend for her.
Larry Olmstead is the “gofer” and takes care of bringing the donations to the office. The group all agree that Larry is handy to have around and he sees that they stay busy. He loves his role as supervisor. It’s obvious his involvement is appreciated.
The Doll Makers need your help. They are in need of people who can do basic stitching on a machine. They also need stuffers and face painters.
Consider helping them out: Help a child and I guarantee you will feel good that you have reached out to someone in need. - 8 - |
