Meet Our Wood Carvers' Class Participants
by

I could look at a block of wood, from all angles and for a long time, and still see a block of wood. The Woodcarvers who meet at CARES every Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. can look at that same wood block and envision birds, animals, figurines and a myriad of other objects.

Much of this inspiration comes from Bunny Sheets, their instructor, who encourages the members to get to work and create! The group agrees that if it were not for Bunny, the recipient of many blue ribbons, they would likely fall apart. Her guidance and friendly demeanor are appreciated by all.

Most participants are snowbirds, some with a background in carving and others new to this art form.  Several joined the classes at the CARES Senior Center on Old Dixie Highway in the early 90’s.  Bob Holgate, Victor Dunn (both snowbirds) and Everett Nagelhout began at that location. They enjoy carving a variety of objects -- Everett carves mostly Santa Clauses.

Judi Barrett and Charlotte Pierce also began at our former location and both prefer carving in relief.  They all enjoy this fun loving group and the fellowship it provides. Judi was responsible for Jean Rooney joining the class two years ago. Jean says these wood carvers are beautiful, helpful people.

Many woodcarvers learned of the lessons here at CARES when they attended the Calusa Woodcarvers Show and met Bunny. Ilajean Jones, Frank LeFeuvre, Warren Dobbs and Dave Stanczyk saw her display and responded to her invitation to come to CARES.  Ilajean always has a good time and never misses a Tuesday. Frank joined the group after realizing classes were available at our facility. Warren read about the class in The Leader. Dave says that Bunny provides the incentive he needs.  Jack Paese, a newcomer, was told of this class by a friend.

Jane Wentworth and Carol Andersen agree with the other class members that it is fun to come and meet new friends.  Betty and Clarence Troutman, a husband and wife team, enjoy pursuing this hobby together.

Bunny, thank you for always encouraging people to join your class at CARES, whether they’ve had prior experience or are holding a block of wood for the very first time.
