Drawing & Watercolors Class By

I have always been in awe when I walk into this class on Friday mornings, and watch the artists sketching with pencil, pen and ink, and painting with water colors. Each member works in the media she is most comfortable with. Some in the group said they found they had talent they were never aware of. Libby Schreck is one who has uncovered talent that had been hidden most of her life. She had no background in art until she came to CARES almost five years ago and was inspired by Helen Grieco, the instructor (Helen has since passed away). Libby had free time and did not know what to do with herself. She is now teaching decorative glass painting at home. Joanne Trezza’s friend told her about the class and they came together. She said this is the most relaxing activity. You get so involved with what you are doing that you forget your problems. She feels that other class members give her inspiration. Florence D’Angelo took art classes many years ago, but never kept up with it. She saw an ad in the Suncoast News several years ago and became a student of Helen Grieco at the old Hudson Senior Center on Old Dixie Highway. Her daughter, Angel Herbert has taken classes in drawing and water colors in New York at the YMCA and has recently joined the class Jean Diesa is a new class member and enjoys water colors and drawings because they are easy to transport. Class member, Lorraine Flannery has the nickname “Monet” because of her style of painting. Her dry sense of humor, caring nature and loyalty to her friends make her loved by all. She was Helen’s right hand and can still be counted on when needed. Lisa Michaels joined the group over a year ago and saw that the group was trying to carry on without Helen. They were looking for leadership and direction. Lisa stepped up and began to guide them in basic drawing skills and good composition. She encourages them to create their own images of nature and still life, rather than copying someone else’s work. Lisa works with new class members one on one in the basics. With the more advanced artists she is another set of eyes giving her professional opinion, helping them to improve perspective, shadowing, etc. She can teach anyone to draw- she will change your attitude about art. Lisa says it’s all about vision. (Read more about Lisa in our January Leader) They all agree that the companionship, lasting friendships and good natured personalities are a definite plus. They take their coffee break in the We Care Café and usually go out to lunch together after the class. Helen Grieco must be smiling down on this group like a proud mother of children whom she taught well. Come to the Arts and Crafts room to view the display of their artwork in various media. Think about joining the class. Everyone is welcome. Lisa Michaels will help you uncover your hidden talent.
