Jottings for June
By Diane Dare
On June 10, 1943, Laszlo Brio patented the ballpoint pen. On June 4, 1977, the first personal computer, Apple II, went on sale. You all learned to use a ballpoint pen. Have you learned to use a computer? If not, consider signing up for our basic computer class. Classes are limited to six students and will resume in September.
June 21 marks the summer solstice when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky. The North Pole is at its most direct tilt towards the sun and the South Pole tilts away from the sun, resulting in the longest day of the year (and the shortest night). The days around the summer solstice are NOT the hottest days, however, because ocean temperatures have not gone up yet. Water being more dense than air, it takes several more weeks for the oceans to heat up the atmosphere.

During these “lazy, hazy days of summer,” activities slow down as our many snowbird residents and volunteers have gone north. With our relaxed summertime pace, this is a good time for YOU to come to the Elfers Center. Try being a volunteer in the Thrift Shop or Telephone Reassurance office. Sign up for a day trip to someplace you’ve never been or want to revisit. Drop in for a friendly game of cards or mah jongg (the various leaders can teach you how to play. Come in on Monday afternoons for bingo or Saturdays for the Country Western Music Jam. Be sure to visit the Thrift Shop to check out their special sales.
