       Facebook Safe

Questions have been brought up about the security of Facebook.  Facebook is a Social Networking site where people connect with family, friends and various social groups.  Facebook is free, but the cost is passed on by selling advertising space and creating partnerships.  A basic Facebook account with no modifications will allow you to be universally connected to all of Facebook's partners.  For some people that is no big deal, but for others it is an extreme lack of privacy.  One thing that you need to keep in mind is that the power is in your hands as to the privacy of your Facebook Account.  Here is a brief overview of the various settings you can change  at will based on what you want to have available to others.

After you log into your Facebook account, notice on the upper right hand part of the screen the three links titled, Home, Profile, and Account.  Click on Account and select Account Settings.  From this page you will be able to change the name that is viewed by others, your username, e-mail address, etc.  You can also modify your privacy from this page.  Those settings are discussed at length below. Also on this page you will be able to modify your account security in that you can ask Facebook to notify you if someone logs into your account from a new device, such as a computer you've never used before or a mobile device.  Lastly, should you decide that Facebook is not for you, you can deactivate your account.

From the main account page, you will also be able to modify how Facebook notifies you, add mobile devices in order to receive text messages from Facebook, set the language preference, and add money for purchasing virtual gifts and playing games.  The final selection at the top of the page is Facebook Ads.  On this page is a very important privacy setting.  You will notice the words: Allow ads on platform pages to show my information to and then you have the option to select either No One or Only my friends.  It is recommended to select No One and then save your changes.  At the bottom of this page, something that sometimes gets overlooked is another section that says: Show my social actions in Facebook Ads to and you have the same options as before.  Please remember to save your selection because if you don't it will revert back to the default or last saved action when you leave this page.

Click on Account and select Privacy Settings in order to define who has the right to look at the items you post on Facebook.  From this page you can modify who can see your pictures and videos as well as who can post messages on your wall. You can make your information available to anyone who is on Facebook, whether they are on your friend list or not, or you can make your information available to Friends Only, which is the recommended selection.  You may also control who can contact you on Facebook and how much of your contact information is visible.  You may also choose to remove your profile from a public listing on search engines.  This is done by selecting Search and de-selecting the Allow box.

Facebook may regularly "enhance" their system and you should check your settings often to make sure that everything is how you like it.  It may be time consuming and irritating, but the site is free so you are getting what you paid for.

Can You Guess Who This Is?

Our busy volunteer coordinator. She is also the Telephone Reassurance coordinator and does the Tuesday morning shift in that office as well as working at the front desk on Thursday mornings. And in her spare time, she fills in at any other time she is needed. A true Elfers devotee!
