Over 700 Saturdays: The Country Western music jam celebrates

The crowd was even bigger on Saturday, January 9th for the celebration: The Northern Connection was performing in the Elfers Annex as they have for the past 14 years. There were well over 100 people listening to the group of acoustic musicians led by Margaree Gray and everyone enjoyed a generous array of cake with their coffee. Only four members of the original group of sixteen remain but their number has swelled to a current 30 musicians. The hall was alive with the music, jokes and applause.

The Northern Connection was formed by Margaree Gray and her husband Marvin in 1996. When they ran out of chairs in their living room, they looked around for larger premises. They found the CARES Elfers Center and have been here ever since. Before Marvin passed away in 2008, he made Margaree promise to keep the group going, which she does. “I like people and I enjoy doing it” she says.

Margaree has always loved music.  It’s in her blood.  Her grandfather was a music teacher and her mother a church pianist.  Marvin also loved music.  He met Margaree when he was 10 and she was 6 and both lived in the Cincinnati area. When they moved to Florida, the Northern Connection was born. Today Margaree still sings with the group. They perform on Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at CARES Elfers Center, 4136 Barker Drive.  Admission is $2 and refreshments are available for purchase.
