Windows 7: First Look

A few years ago my wife and I went to supper with another couple. Nadine had been having trouble eating, so we asked her how she liked the meal. She answered "Well, it didn't remind me of anything bad." That is kind of how I feel about Windows 7 after testing it for a few weeks; it doesn't remind me of anything bad.

I have been using Windows 7 RC (Release Candidate). The October 22 release of Windows 7 will be the 9th release of a Microsoft Windows product for home users. No product starting with Windows 1 has ever been a finished product. I would not expect anything more from Windows 7. Look for an update next summer.

One feature about Windows 7 that had me worried was the "Windows XP mode, a feature that allows Windows 7 to easily run applications designed for Windows XP." This made me think that Windows 7 would not support programs like Microsoft Office 2003 or the ton of other products that I have been using since Windows XP. I found that, with one exception, all of my software continues to work on Win7. The one exception is a nine year old HP Laser printer. It took me two weeks to get it working with Vista but I finally managed, with help from HP, so as soon as Win7 is released to the general public I will try again.

Below are the published requirements for Windows 7. The memory figures in [square] brackets are my thoughts on the subject. Memory is so cheap that there is no reason not to have enough.

Next month I will talk about upgrading your existing Windows Operating System. The tentative title of that article will be "The Good, the Bad, the Ugly and the Ugliest"
