Upgrading to Windows 7
(Or The Good, the Bad, the Ugly and the Ugliest)
If you have been following this column you know that on the 22nd of this month Windows 7 will be on the market. The question many of us will have to answer is "Should we upgrade?" What follows is opinion! My opinion for what it is worth.
First of all, the only software that can be easily upgraded is Windows Vista. Microsoft is not making an upgrade for Windows XP or earlier. This means if you have Windows XP you would have to reformat your hard drive, losing all of your programs and data, and load Win7 from scratch. As an alternative, you could upgrade to Vista then upgrade to Win7. That shouldn't take more than a week or two. After agonizing over the situation for the past few weeks I have decided that I will not upgrade any of my XP machines. XP was and is an outstanding operating system and Win7 offers nothing that I or any small business needs. My advice is to use your XP machine until it rolls over and dies, then buy what ever is on the market and working. If we are lucky it will be a child or grandchild of UNIX (Linux, Ubuntu, etc).
If you have Windows ME, either downgrade to Windows 98SE, upgrade to Windows XP, or bury it in the backyard. Even Microsoft tries to ignore the existence of WinME.
If you have Windows 98SE you have a machine that should be replaced within the next year. It was a good machine and has had a long life, ten years or more, but that life is coming to a close.
Anything older than Win98SE, (i.e. Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows 3.0, 2.0, 1.0) is a zombie, and I don't mean the rum and fruit drink.
That leaves Vista. I have already upgraded one computer to Vista and it only took me two days but I did not have the finished copy of Win7. I have decided that I will upgrade my personal (Vista) computer to Win7. My XP machines I will leave alone. If you are the one person in a 100 that has had no problems with Vista, you may want to leave well enough alone. Otherwise I suggest that you wait until the first of the year to do anything. Let other people report the problems with upgrading and provide the solutions.
