Picasa
Over the
past few years many people have extolled the value of a photo
management program called Picasa (now Picasa3). Picasa will search
your hard drive for photos, display them, make corrections, and if
requested to do so, will post them on the web. My position has
always been that I did not need this program because I had
ThumbsPlus ($50) and PhotoShop ($700, and after three years I still
haven't figured out how to use it). I finally decided that I should
at least look at Picasa ($0) because the price was right. The product
comes from Google: but an easier way would be to do a Google search on Picasa3 download. The first thing I did after installing the product was search my hard drives (I have four) for photos. I haven't done this in ThumbsPlus because it would take hours. Picasa did it in about 5 minutes(!) I found photos that I thought I had lost years ago! I also found photos that should be deleted because they were so bad. I know I could probably fix them in PhotoShop but I would have to pore through three or four manuals to figure out how.
Picasa has one button to push and the photo went from over exposed to nearly perfect. I had a flag and flag pole picture I took that looked good except the flag pole was leaning (it had to be the pole, I certainly wouldn't be at fault!). Picasa straightened the pole in 5 seconds. When I tried the red eye fix of a mother and infant, it worked great on the mother's eyes but I had to select the infant's eyes but after that it worked well.
Picasa has really impressed me with its ease of operation and features. The help button is a link to a web site. I was able to find answers to all of my questions easily and quickly. Since I was unable to test the network sharing feature of Picasa, I borrowed the following from Jessica Dolcourt's review of the product: "Picasa really shines when it comes to organizing, uploading, and sharing pictures. New syncing and sharing buttons on the album level let you keep folders up-to-date on your Picasa Web album without leaving the desktop app. The same goes with its neighboring 'Share' button, which uploads photos online and e-mails the link from Picasa's interface to your contacts. Finally, the price is right! It does not contain any spyware or adware so it won't hurt to download a copy and try it. We would like to offer a one-day computer class on Picasa. The 2-hour course would be $11 and a professional photographer has volunteered to be the instructor. Please let Katy know if you are interested or call (727) 847-1290 so that we can see if there is enough interest to set-up a class. Come and learn how to enhance and preserve your favorite photographs.
