With great sorrow we announce the passing of our Computer and Pinochle Instructor, Julia Bransford. Julia joined Elfers as the Computer I Instructor in 2006 and taught until she became ill at the end of 2008. More recently, she volunteered to instruct the pinochle class. Thanks to her enthusiasm the pinochle class expanded to include two and sometimes three extra tables for those who wanted to join but needed some tuition. Our newer pinochle class members greatly mourn her passing and have missed her encouraging touch during these last few months.

Julia was born in Chicago and lived in New York, Connecticut, Philadelphia and California before settling in Florida in the spring of 2005. She was in fact ‘Dr’ Bransford, having attended college in California and gaining her PhD in Education in 1975. Soon after her arrival in New Port Richey, Julia began volunteer teaching at the University of South Florida and Elfers Senior Center. She also enjoyed jazz music, literature, puzzles, games, cooking and gardening.

It is going to be a long time before we find another teacher like Julia. She is sadly missed.

Progress can be seen on the Elfers School renovations. The building has been stabilized and every brick  has been re-pointed. You will have been watching a team of bricklayers swarming all over the scaffolding, digging out the old crumbling mortar and replacing it with more modern and longer-lasting material. Recently the work was inspected and small portions were pushed out here and there so that had to be repaired. All is now finished and we await news on the interior work. It’s good to see the outside looking so much more attractive. The bricklayers took painstaking care with every brick and it shows. Now, if there were just new windows and landscaping, all would be beautiful. It’s just a matter of time (and no, we don’t know yet how much).

It’s Summer!

With May comes warmer weather and while some of our activities take a summer break, others continue year round. And of course our Thrift Shop stays open. The Travel Department is planning many excursions and there may even be an ice-cream social or two if you would like that.

To our friends who go North, have a safe trip and we will see you in autumn.

To those who spend the summer months in Florida, we invite you to join our friendly groups and perhaps try something new, pick up some reading material from our Book Exchange, or just come in for a cup of coffee, say “Hi” and watch whatever is going on at the time.
