I was recently asked by someone what "Social Entrepreneurship" meant. I was never one to let ignorance stand in my way so I proceeded to give a definition. A few seconds into my explanation it became obvious even to me that I did not know what I was talking about. So I followed the lead of what politicians do when they cannot answer a question, twisted it to a question that I could answer. "Let me show you how to get your own answer" I said as I opened my Internet browser and typed in "www.wikipedia.org".
Wikipedia is a multilingual, Web-based, free-content encyclopedia project with articles contributed and edited by experts in various fields. There has been criticism that it does not always live up to its promise but I have always found it to be reasonably accurate and non-biased. Occasionally you may find a notice at the start of an article explaining that what follows may not be up to Wikipedia standards in some way. For example at the start of an article about Rush Limbaugh you will find "The neutrality of this article is disputed." Articles that do not live up to Wikipedia standards may have a "Talk Page" that is a place where people can voice their opinion as to what is right or wrong with a particular article and what can be done to make the article less biased. As an example, in the talk page for the Rush Limbaugh article it was generally agreed the terms "stupid jerk" and "loud mouthed moron" should be removed. (I just made up that last part in case anyone checks up on me).
Besides having an
online encyclopedia, there is a dictionary (Wiktionary), current
news stories (Wikinews), species directory (Wikispecies), an open
source collection of media files (Wikimedia), text books (Wikibooks),
and a collection of quotations (Wikiquote). I will close this article with a sample from Wikiquote: "As we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know, there are known unknowns, that is to say, we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, the ones we do not know we do not know."
