Clown Costume Donated to Elfers

One of the Elfers volunteers, who does not wish her name published, has donated a clown costume to the center.

The costume was given to her by Charles Campbell, reportedly one of the Flying Wallendas circus act famed for their daredevil stunts and for performing high wire acts without a safety net.  Unfortunately most of the original performers died while performing.  Campbell is said to be one of the survivors.

Campbell advised her that he was trained as a clown by Emmett Kelly, the circus performer, who created the memorable clown figure “Weary Willie” which was based on depression era hobos. He explained that he donated his time and even played a clown in a movie with John Wayne. Before moving to Oregon, Campbell gave the clown costume to the volunteer.

Now it’s up to the Elfers Center to decide what to do with the costume. Should we sell it in the thrift shop, auction it off at the center or perhaps try and sell it on e-Bay?  What do you think?  We’d like to have your ideas.  Please let Katy know what you think.  And, a special thank you to the volunteer who donated the costume.

Volunteers!

It’s your party on Sunday, December 13th at 2:00pm. Please sign up at the front desk (if you signed up in October, please put your name back on the list – the original list was lost). Spouses and partners also welcome!
