YOU KNOW…….? This
month we are featuring two
Matty
Savino Matilda (Matty) Savino was born in Brooklyn, New York. She attended Our Lady of Lourdes Grammar School in Brooklyn, then graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School in Jamaica in 1956.
Matty then took a job with Equitable Life Assurance Company in New York City. She married in 1959 and had two children, a girl and a boy. They lived on Grand Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, then bought a house in Elmont, Long Island in 1963.
Matty moved to New Port Richey in 2000 and became a volunteer at Elfers in 2003. She works at the front desk on Monday afternoons and loves to join the BINGO players in the games. Matty manages to answer the phone and talk to frequent visitors while frequently winning! Once a month the St. John’s Institute hold their hearing clinic during Matty’s shift so then her organizational skills come into play. This is a very busy event since a large crowd attends the clinic. And in the winter, Matty registers the computer class students and makes reminder calls to get them to the classes.
All in all, Matty is a great help and we thank her.

Edna Vlahakis
Edna Vlahakis was born in New York City and grew up in Harlem and Washington Heights. She graduated from Hunter College High School in mid-Manhattan and remembers taking a bus or train to get there. She enjoyed NYC life, going to shows, museums, Central Park, the Easter Parade etc. and at the time she hadn’t realized how lucky she was to have all those things close by.
On leaving school, she went into banking and remained in banks all her working life. She married the boy next door after going to school with his sister. They moved to Bergen County in New Jersey where their two children, John and Laura were born. Her Greek husband, Manny, was always in the restaurant business, and together they opened a restaurant that they had for 5 years, with Edna helping when she could.
After frequent trips to Florida over the years, the family finally moved here in 1973 and bought a house in Colonial Hills. They loved the outdoors and settled in well. Edna again worked in a bank, in the bookkeeping department, and ended up as manager. When the bank failed in 1991, Edna took the opportunity to retire. Manny died in 2000 and Edna has volunteered at Elfers since 2001. You will find her at the front desk on Wednesday mornings until she moves over to the Mah Jongg class for the afternoon. Then she plays bridge on Thursdays and Pinochle on Fridays – an Elfers all-rounder! Edna not only volunteers for CARES, she also works as an usher with the Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Richey Suncoast Theater, as well as at Pasco-Hernando Community College.
