Computer Column

This month I get to do what we intended when we started this column and that is answer user questions.

Q:
Just what is a laptop (and why would I want one)?

A: A laptop computer (also called a notebook computer, or notebook) is a small mobile computer, typically weighing 1 to 12 pounds. Laptops usually run on a battery (for 2 to 4 hours) or from an external AC/DC adapter that charges the battery while it also supplies power to the computer itself.

Laptops contain components that are similar to their desktop counterparts and perform the same functions, but are miniaturized and optimized for mobile use and efficient power consumption. Laptops are typically less powerful for the same price.

Why would you want one? They can be taken to McDonalds, Starbucks, and dozens of other places that have wireless Internet and used just as if you were at home. They take up a lot less space than desktop and can be easily taken on vacation.

Q:
When I put a CD disk in my computer, it runs and I can see what’s on it. If I put a DVD, which looks just like a CD, nothing happens or it tells me “Please insert disk!” What do I have to do to run a DVD?

A: It is unfortunate that CD’s and DVD’s look alike. A CD hold approximately 700 Megabytes of data while a DVD can hold 4,300 to 8,000 Megabytes of data. DVDs are used mostly for movies but can certainly used for data. You would expect any DVD player to play CD’s but CD players cannot play DVDs. There are three things you can do to run DVD’s. 1: buy an internal DVD player and replace your existing CD player with it. It will cost about $40 but it will have to be installed. 2: buy an external DVD Player that plugs into a USB port. It will cost about $80 but it is very easy to install and can be easily moved from computer to computer. 3: buy a new computer with a 24” screen and  a Blu-Ray DVD player. It will cost buckets of money but you can watch movies with higher resolution than real life.

Q:
Can I view a DVD on my laptop?

A: Yes, 10 years ago my wife would watch movies on my laptop in the car while I would drive.

Q:
Would it be cheaper and easier to get a laptop for use with DVD’s than to do whatever would be necessary to upgrade my existing computer?

A: Good laptops are cheaper today than they ever have been so I think buying a laptop rather than upgrading existing equipment is well worth considering, especially if your existing computer is more that six years old.

Q:
Could I hook my laptop to my current printer and print something from the DVD?

A: Any thing you can do on a desktop you can do on a laptop. The reverse is not true. So yes, it is possible to hook your laptop to a printer. There could be one major problem, if your printer is more that five years old and you computer is running Vista, it may not be possible. Vista does not “play well” with older equipment.
