The October Communicator brings you information on all of these subjects.
SHINE
(Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders, a program of the
Florida Department of Elder Affairs)
will be at CARES Elfers Center on the third Monday of
October, November and December 2008, providing guidance on
Medicare, health insurance, prescriptions and long-term care:
October 20th, November 17th and December 15th,
10:00am – 12:00pm Counselors will be available in the coffee shop to answer any questions or concerns you may have about your medications and Medicare coverage. Please bring your medication lists and questions; individual advice will be available. SHINE counseling services are provided free of charge by volunteers who uphold client confidentiality and provide information and unbiased advice.
SIGN-UP – Part I As you may have heard, this is a national election year. There are three ways for you to vote for your candidate: absentee by mail, early voting at selected locations or at your local polling place on election day, November 4th.
According to the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, 43% of people who voted in the 2006 general election were age 60 or older. Thus, elders, or senior citizens, are the largest voting block in our state. BUT – they also say only one-third of Floridians age 60 and older are registered to vote!
Are you registered to vote? If not, you still have time to register. Forms are available at post offices, public libraries, the Supervisor of Elections office (847-8162), and online at pascovotes.com. Forms are also available here at CARES Elfers Center. Fill out the form and send it before October 6.
Remember, your VOTE represents the Voice of the Elders!
SIGN-UP – Part 2 CARES Elfers Center is really an Activities Center and we invite you to participate. For some activities you do need to sign-up in advance, such as Travel Department day trips (our bus seats 21) and Computer Classes (instruction manuals are provided). At other activities, a sign-up sheet may be passed around so the office knows the level of interest, or so group leaders can contact attendees if necessary. Of course, we are always delighted to sign-up volunteers to lead classes, work at our front desk, in Telephone Reassurance, or the Thrift Shop. Newcomers can sign our Visitors sheet and check us out. There is no obligation but we hope you’ll be interested enough to return.
