An easy fix for computer problems

During the past month I was able to look like I knew what I was doing by using a Windows feature called “System Restore”. Twice during the month I got a call that sounded like: “It worked fine last week but then it just quit!” I would ask “did you install any new programs or hardware?” The answer was “no” in both cases but just because you did not install any software does not mean that software was not installed. Microsoft is good about sending updates to your computer at random intervals. For most people the updates are welcome because they increase security, or so Microsoft promises. Occasionally there will be a conflict between the update and some piece of software you may have installed years ago.

Gaming software is also a major source of problems during update. There are so many versions of “Mahjong” or “Spider” that Microsoft cannot test their update against them all.

For business computers the answer is simple: Never install unapproved software! For home computers you install what you want but be braced for the day the computer quits working. If or when it does quit Microsoft has a solution. It is a utility calledSystem Restore”.

To find the utility select Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore. Select¤ Restore my computer to an earlier time”. Then select Next. You will see at least two months worth of calendars. Some of the dates are in bold. These are the dates that you can go back to. Pick one that is before the date you started having trouble, and click Next”.

You will go through some informational screens that explain what you are doing and you will also be told that you can “undo” any action you may perform that does not solve your problems.   Eventually you will have to re-start your computer and your problems should be a fading memory.

Ice Cream Social

We enjoyed the ice cream social last month so much that we are going to do it again on Monday, October 20th. Say farewell to the summer heat as we get together again for more ice cream and conversation. Sugar-free ice cream and toppings will be available. $3 admission comes with a raffle ticket for door prizes. We would like to thank the Morton Plant-Mease North Bay Hospital for providing the toppings and plasticware. Thanks are also due to Martha Bolduc for organizing the donation and to all those who helped serve and clean up and make the occasion a success.
