 HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

January 15, 1929 - April 4, 1968

In his short lifetime, Dr. King accomplished more than many people who had worked for racial justice over the years..

He believed in a non-violent approach to the problems that faced the black Americans at that time.  He was a follower of Mohandas K, Gandhi and even though a few Black Americans became impatient with his philosophy of peace and love, he never wavered from his beliefs.

He laid out six principles of non-violence.

1. Non-violence is not passive, but requires courage.

2. Non-violence seeks to win the friendship and understanding of the opponent, not to humiliate him.

3. Evil itself, not the people committing the evil acts, should be opposed.

4. Those committed to non-violence must be willing to suffer without retaliation, as suffering can be redemptive.

5. A rejection of hatred, animosity or violence of the spirit, as well as refusal to commit physical violence.

6. The non-violent resister must have a deep faith in the future, stemming from the conviction that “the universe is on the side of justice”.

We still have a long way to go.

I have a dream  . . .
