May is Older Americans Month
Originating with a presidential proclamation in May 1963, Older Americans Month has been proclaimed by presidents every year since then. Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since JFK has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking the entire nation to pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities.
When Older Americans Month was
established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached
their 65th birthdays. Now the
United States is nearing the start of a tremendous demographic
shift. Beginning in 2011, the first of 78 million baby boomers
(people born between 1946 and 1964) will start transitioning into
retirement, kicking off an expansion in the number of elderly people
that will continue for decades. According to the U.S. Census Bureau,
one out of every nine baby boomers will live to be at least age 90.
